Test Types: Usability Videos

Gather feedback on video and easily understand key insights using our powerful AI video analysis for usability videos.

Updated over 7 months ago

Usability videos are a great way to get user interface feedback by see people interacting with your product directly. You get videos of users' screens as they navigate around your product and share their thoughts.

By understanding a users' thought process, and seeing where they might be getting confused or missing important steps, your product team can gather deeper insights about your user interface and changes that can be made to make your product more intuitive.

Choose Usability Video from the test type section when you create a new test.

Test Details

Test Title

Your survey title is shown publicly to potential applicants during recruiting. Make it something relevant to your test, for example: "First impressions of a strategy game".

Brief description of your test

In the description, you can describe a bit about what you're researching or who you're targeting. This is also shown to applicants during the recruiting phase

How are my test title and description shown during recruiting?

When you launch your test, testers will receive an email invite with your Test Title as the email subject and Test Description in the email body. It will look similar to the screenshot below and will ask testers to apply to participate.

In the below email "We want your feedback on a new packaging design" is the Test Title, and "Help us understand what resonates..." is the Brief Description of Your Test.

Test Instructions (Usability Video Tests)

Choose between a Screen Recording or take a Selfie Video. Screen Recording is a traditional usability video where you see the testers screen and hear them as they speak their thoughts out-loud.

Selfie Video does not include a screen recording. Think of this as a video-survey. After using your product, each tester answers questions about the experience in a selfie video.

Screen Recordings

In the instructions, be sure to include:

  • Link to access your product (e.g. link to your website, TestFlight public beta URL, Play Store, APK, Firebase, prototype URL, etc).

  • Describe what you want testers to capture on video.

  • Any questions you'd like testers to answer in the video.

For example:

Download our new app here! ____________________

As you go through the following process recording your video, be sure to speak your thoughts out loud and share all your feedback, positive and negative.

Please sign up for your account, and go through the onboarding process. Set up your character using any of the available add-ons.

1. How would you rate the onboarding process?
2. How would you describe this game in your own words?

Now play Level 1. Let us know what you are trying to accomplish. What do you like and dislike?

Don't include:

  • Don't expect a tester to purchase something or go through a process that requires sensitive personal or financial information

Selfie Videos

In the instructions, be sure to include:

  • Link to access your product (e.g. link to your website, TestFlight public beta URL, Play Store, APK, Firebase, prototype URL, etc).

  • Any tasks you'd like testers to complete BEFORE starting their video

  • Any questions you'd like testers to answer in the video.

For example:

Download our new app here! ____________________

Please sign up for your account, and go through the onboarding process. Set up your character and play Level 1.

After you're done playing, answer the following questions in a selfie video:

1. What are your overall impressions of the game?
2. How likely would you be to recommend the game to others?
3. How would you rate the learning curve of the game?
4. Do you see yourself playing this more in the future?

Don't include:

Do not include any tasks that you expect the tester to capture in a screen recording. For that, use the Screen Recording option, not Selfie Videos.

Don't expect a tester to purchase something or go through a process that requires sensitive personal or financial information

Timing & Incentives

Video Length

Define how long a video you want testers to capture.

Note: Testers will have up to 12 hours to finish your tasks, regardless of the expected time required. If they show as "Active" during your test, it's because their due date has not yet passed.

Pricing

On our Recruit plan (pay-as-you go), you'll see a price per tester, based on the time required, test duration, and targeting requirements. This price is inclusive of all costs and tester rewards/incentives, and there are no additional fees.

For our Professional plans (including subscription plans or custom plans), you can customize the incentives that you offer to testers and save up to 50% per tester with a larger contract or subscription commitment. You can also provide custom incentives like gift cards, physical products, or choose to provide no incentive when testing with your own testers. Our system automatically recommends average incentive amounts based on your test type, time expectations, and your target audience. You can learn more about choosing how much to incentivize in this article.

Recruiting & Screening

You can choose your recruitment criteria and screening questions like you normally would on any test. Learn how tester recruiting works here.

Survey Design

You can decide if you'd like testers to complete a survey after they finish the video recording.

Standard UX Survey

Our standard UX survey includes industry standard qualitative and quantitative questions. This is a safe bet for any UX test, and you can use as-is or edit as you desire!

Building your own survey

You can build your own survey by using any of our base question types, or our core question bank. Learn about the various survey question types here and how to use show/hide logic here.

Participation Verification Survey: Linking feedback to your database usage data

BetaTesting does not integrate directly with your product. A Participation Verification survey is useful in the following cases:

  1. If you want to cross reference your user feedback to exact usage data in your database

  2. If you want testers to prove they participated fully and completed your tasks and instructions

The Participant Verification Survey is a simple 3 question standalone survey that asks testers for the following info:

  • Username / email / or phone number used to access your product, so you can cross-reference the dat

  • Screenshot to validate that they used the product

  • A few sentences about the testing experience.

For a Usability Video test, since you will have a video recording, this survey type is not usually used unless you want a way to cross reference the user's session to your actual database data (e.g. to ensure logging is working correctly).

You also have the option to add "participation verification" questions directly to any survey that you create. Choose "Verify Participation" within the Core Question Bank, and it will add these 3 questions directly to any survey.

No Survey

You can choose to simply collect videos without a follow-up survey.

Analyzing your Usability Videos

See our blog article for full details on our powerful AI usabilty video analysis features, including the following:

  • Automated transcriptions w/ timestamps

  • Key topic detection, to automatically detect the key topics within the video and their associated sentiment.

  • Video summary

  • Sentence sentiment

  • Video overlays for sentence sentiment and key phrase sentiment

  • Copy/share links to specific points of time in the video

Downloading and Sharing your Videos

Downloading

You can download any individual video directly on the video analysis page. You can also request and download a zip file with ALL videos or other media uploaded to your project. Within your test results, you can click this icon to generate a zip file (top right of page). Note, that it can take 5-10 minutes to generate the zip file, as videos are very large. You can start the process and come back and reload the page any time.

Sharing

You can share a link directly to a specific video and even a specific time within a video recording. You can click the checkbox at the bottom of the share popup to share to any specific moment. Your team will need an account on BetaTesting in order to access the link.
