Targeting Your Community and Past Testers

How to invite testers from your community, re-invite past testers, and how invite queues work.

When someone applies to or takes part in one of your tests, they join your community. Retargeting means going back to that group for your next test instead of recruiting people who have never seen your product. It is the fastest way to fill a test, and it is the only way to run a genuine follow-up: a second round on a redesign, a check-in with the same people weeks later, or a deeper session with the testers who hit a particular issue.

You choose who to bring back on the Tester Recruiting page of your test, or straight from your community. Retargeting is part of community management, so it may not be available on your account.

Ways to target your community of testers:

There are three routes, and they all end in the same place: an invite queue attached to your test.

  • All past applicants queues everyone who has applied to or taken part in one of your tests.

  • Choose specific testers opens a picker where you filter your community and add the people who match. Tags, past tests, demographics, custom profile fields and devices all live here.

  • Create New Test from your community starts a fresh test with the testers you have selected already in its queue.

If you previously used separate invite by tags or invite from past tests options, both are still possible. They are now filters inside Choose specific testers rather than options of their own.

How to invite all past applicants

  1. Open your test and go to Tester Recruiting, or the Recruiting Settings tab on a live test.

  2. Under How do you want to recruit testers?, choose Your Community.

  3. Under Which testers would you like to invite from your community?, select All past applicants.

  4. Check the count shown underneath. It tells you how many testers have been added to the queue.

How to choose specific testers

  1. On the same screen, select Choose specific testers.

  2. Click Manage testers, or click any of the figures above it to open the picker already showing that group.

  3. Filter the list. You can filter by Tags, by Tests to pick people from a particular past test, by Demographics, Custom Profile Fields, Owned Devices, and by Testing Status to skip anyone already busy in another test.

  4. Select the testers you want and click Add to Invite Queue.

  5. Click Done.

Working with the invite queue

The picker groups your community into All testers, Queued for Invite, Not Selected, and, once the test is live, Invited. For how to work inside each group, save a filter combination for next time, and rescind invitations on a live test, see Filtering and inviting testers from your community.

Setting your recruiting target

Set the size of the test under How many testers would you like to recruit? on the same screen. If you want everyone in your queue to get an invitation and be able to take part, that number has to be larger than your queue. Otherwise invitations go out in batches only until the target is met, and later applicants will not get a place.

Being invited is not the same as taking part. Every tester still decides for themselves, based on the incentive, the timing, and their experience of your product last time.

Starting from your Community Page

Another option to target your community is to start by filtering the testers in your community, and then creating a new test for a specific group of testers.

  1. Go to Your Community and stay on the Members tab.

  2. Filter and select the testers you want to bring back.

  3. Click Create New Test.

  4. Pick a template if you have one, or choose the type of test, then confirm.

The new test is created with those testers already in its invite queue and its recruiting method set to your community, so you can go straight to writing the test itself.

Things to know

  • The picker only lists testers who have finished joining your community. Someone invited but never onboarded will not appear.

  • Switching between All past applicants and Choose specific testers clears your current selection. You are warned before it happens.

  • If your test offers no incentive, only your own users, the people you originally brought into BetaTesting, are targeted. Reaching testers who came from the BetaTesting Panel requires an incentive.

  • Queued invitations are sent when the test launches, not when you add someone to the queue.

  • Testers who have already joined the test cannot be removed from the queue or have their invitation rescinded. Their row is locked and marked Joined.
