How to record your screen & audio on an iPhone or iPad for a Usability Video

Using the iOS Screen Recording tool

Updated over 4 months ago

When a test requires recording your screen and sharing your thoughts, follow these simple steps to make sure you record a high quality video with your screen shared correctly and audio on.

A few things to remember for all video recordings

  • Audio is required. Speak through your thoughts out loud.

  • No background noise.

  • Practice! Ensure your recording works before every test. If there are audio/video issues, you won't earn the reward for the test

  • Be sure not to record any private information.

  • Upload the video through BetaTesting on your phone's browser, or use Dropbox/Google Drive to help upload using your computer

iOS Screen Recording

1. Enable Screen Recording in the Control Center if you never have in the past

Go to Settings > Control Center, then tap the plus icon next to Screen Recording.

2. Ensure you record your audio by enabling your microphone

The screen below will then appear. You'll see that your microphone is turned off. It is important that you click the icon to turn your microphone ON so your voice will be heard on the video. Click the circle near the Turn the microphone on so you can talk out loud as you go through a product or prototype. The circle should turn red.

3. Start recording

Click the Start Recording button above the microphone icon in the screenshot above.

4. Follow the tasks for your test, speak your thoughts out loud

Follow the tasks provided on BetaTesting for the app you are testing.

  1. You can use a second device (e.g. your laptop) to review the tasks and questions on BetaTesting while you use the app on your iPhone.

  2. OR, you can switch back and forth on your iPhone between the tabs for (A) the app you're testing, and (B) the test instructions on BetaTesting.

5. Upload your video to BetaTesting

Watch your video on your phone (you can access it in the Photos), and ensure the audio and video recorded properly. Then, upload it to BetaTesting where required for your test.
